This honestly just makes you look like a moron for thinking this is a point about a 10 year old game. They've moved on from sprites. I'm just asking that people do more than mock-ups of still frames and actually animate the sprites. I'd love to play BW/BW2 on HD settings, but if the sprites don't move something is lost.

I dont fricking understand this at all
like, if you want to make it like gen 4 where there's no animation, the default pose that's in the pokedex and isn't animated is already that and looks better

Anon when they just rotate images without fixing the blur its crappy pixel art, shitty spriting. Good games leave it that way like its half assed. And don't fricking mention tweening that doesn't work that way in pixel art.
you skimmed down the pixels on an upscaled image of the game so the actual sprite of that new serperior is not what it looks like. the size of a pixel on it is not the same as the original sprite.
pokemon sprites in gen 5 have a max size of something like 128x128 (might be more or less, been a while since I made romhacks) and your serperior sprite has fricking quarter-pixels so they'd probably have to up it to 512x512.
it would probably end up looking even worse than gen 5 on an actual ds screen, especially if the camera moves like it does in gen 5
but yeah if you rework the game from a base level sure

As cool as these look, there is a REASON nobody does more than mock-up stills. BW not only uses animated sprites, it also uses a Dynamic Camera that moves in and out. All of these designs seem like they'd work in a vacuum of nothing moving ever, which isn't how it is in the actual game. Even if GF could've done better, you aren't proving your point posting Stills.
If we want to complain about ANYthing we know GF CAN do and DIDN'T. Look at the Pokestar Studio battle field and the lack of that kind of field outside of the Studio.
Sprites can only be a maximum size, and the fact it moves in and out means the sprites get less wiggle room for sizing. Additionally, it means they are likely to blur at different angles.
I went to find all the Pokestar Studio backgrounds and noticed that MOST of them aren't ANYwhere to find outside of shots of the actual battles on them. Which is very disappointing.
Yeah, in universe they are using a Green Screen and in the 'movie' reshowings it shows the actual background. The main thing is, since they have battle backgrounds IN the game, outside of lore reasons, like that. It means they could've done it for ALL the battle backgrounds TECHNICALLY.
Yes you could. I'm sure the trillion dollar company can handle it.

DS cartridge isn't going to fit 649 pokemon sprites or animations if the resolution was as high as possible for the handheld, on top of all the other game data it would need to store along with the pokemon.
>DS cartridge has enough space for 649 pokemon front, back, and shiny sprites, every single texture that has to be used in the overworld, all the music, and extra bullshit like pokestar studios props, and STILL has plenty of space to spare >make ONE set of the pokemon sprites slighly bigger? NOOOOOO THAT’S SUDDENLY TOO MUCH FOR THE DS TO HANDLE AIEEEEE!!!!
Reminder that the DS has a maximum resolution of 256 by 192 pixels. The pixels in that improved picture are too small to be properly represented on the actual hardware.
All the empty complains (that seem more like bait than anything else) in this thread only help to reaffirm my love for gen V sprites. I wish they had made more games during that time with the same sprites.
Also the screens of the shitposters are always high resolution pics from emulators, and they disable the filters as well. It looks better in console. They couldn't have done better because of the DS resolution.

I can agree to this. It is hard to think of many of the Sprite Animations that were just good. Most were passable and some were pretty bad. Because Steelix has always been a bit of a problem to animate. All forms of Pokemon media designed him inconsistently. Hes clearly an Iron Cobra and slithers through land but the games had him be some sort of floating polygon up till PBR. And the anime frequently draws him with a flat "shovel face" even though in 3D media his head is rounded like a speedboat. As much as I think Gen 6 might have made him more "accurate" I feel like he just looks so short and small just to accommodate the 3DS screens. I actually prefer the older model to anything that came after it.
Gen 6 ruined a lot of aesthetic and Im still reminded of it every time I play new Pokemon.
not here to defend gen 6 or this poster but the "lol actually I think the bad animation is good aren't I wacky teehee lol he's dancing!!!" replies are cancerous
>They aren't high quality, but they still look nice for the msot part and represent the Pokémon well.
This is the issue though. They're serviceable, but so are the 3D models. Yet they both could've been so much better if not for the laziness and greed of GF. Both need to be called out equally. If you just settle for whatever is decent instead of demand what is objectively better, I don't know what to say to you. The franchise will remain stuck in a barrel of shit because of this mentality of it's fans
I think it is because back in the day we'd constantly get new Sprites for every pokemon with each new game, with minor improvements each time they showed up. Which made it easier to swallow them not being as good as they could be. But now that they've been using the same models for 10 years and have made almost no progress in improving stuff involving them, people are a bit upset. They're starting to take more steps, but way too behind.
But you are right; GF is lazy and greedy and always have been. Always remember, Iwata and Miyamoto had to both come in and save their asses in different times in the olden days.
>I think it is because back in the day we'd constantly get new Sprites for every pokemon with each new game
A frickton of Gen 3 backsprites were directly traced over Gen 2 ones and the majority of returning mon in Gen 5 simply took their Gen 4 sprites and tweened them.

Someone actually analyzed all the sprites about a year and a half ago and only about a THIRD are actually the same pose as themselves from DP, Pt, or HGSS
>They are more animated than the 3D models
Why are 5gays so delusional?
One looping dance is more animated somehow than a model with multiple attack animations, idle animations, and animations that play outside of battle. Unovagays don't play pokemon games.
most gen 5 sprites are just idle bouncing. you should be complaining about how it’s on a computer in a completely different aspect ratio, and also with a static camera.
Okay, not exactly the same thing, BUT it is high quality Sprites in Motion on a comparable size to BW. So this is a good first step. All that is left is seeing if it can run on an actual DS, THEN the final step is too see how much space each of those sprites take up to see if all 600+ Pokemon in BW can fit in the game at that quality.
But GJ anon, you at least posted the first proof of concept. Just 2 more things to check. I'm more excited to see if this is possible, because the possibility of a HQ BW romhack is pretty neat to me. )Though I doubt it happening.)

R-moron-kun... a ROM I found of Pokemon Black is already 105 MB. Unless you wanted them to double their catridge size (and though I'm not particularly knowledgeable on production costs here, it'd make sense for this to be a little less than double the costs of production) they would've only had about 23 MB remaining.
Pokemon BW took up almost the entirety of the 256mb cartridge they were working with. B2W2 similarly took up the entirety of the 512mb cartridge it had
They clearly needed Iwata to help them out with compression again...

When BW came out normalgays I knew back then told me they were actually interested in giving Pokémon a try again but the backsprites looked so bad to the point of being the only deal breaker.
They were fine with the ice cream and trash pokémon, it's the backsprites that they simply couldn't stand. Can't blame them honestly.

Is it wiggling? I never saw that, I always saw it spinning the bottom part of its tail in a circle. Mind you, that is still a dumb animation to give it, but it just never looked like wiggling.
It looks like a worm flinching on the ground
I can see that.
I can agree to this. It is hard to think of many of the Sprite Animations that were just good. Most were passable and some were pretty bad. But I also just disagree that XY Models were a pure upgrade even over bad Sprite Animations. Because it just looks so lifeless. Which was the main thing I was arguing about. [I'm not the original Anon the other anon originally replied to.]
the gif is sped up
>that Steelix
Holy fricking kino
Gen 5 just gets better every day
>I can't deal with some animations being a little wonky
>I would rather have basically no animation at all!
>steelix in gen 5
>does nothing but dance like a moron
>steelix in 3D
>has different attack animations
>has a flinch animation
>has a fainting animation
>has different animations if I pet it in amie
>"i-i-it has basically no animation at all...."
>Steelix in 3D
>barely moves
>is a huge downgrade from Stadium amd Colosseum games
>some
Anon MOST of them look wonky. And why are you pretending as if you can't just...ask for better animated sprites? Why are the only options just stick with the eyesores or no animation at all? We know that the DS can handle a lot more heavy stuff so it shouldn't be a problem, If GF actually put effort
meanwhile in gen 8:
/vp/ bros, why does the 2001 Steelix (running on hardware from 1996) looks better than the others?
Stadium 1/2 still have yet to be topped in terms of models and animations.
Now that's a metal basilisk animation not that stupid looking fish flopping around out of water seen in
>Stadium 1/2 still have yet to be topped in terms of models and animations.
BR
Any steelix vore? Asking for a friend
Based dancing steelix is peak Soul
This thread made me find out that Steelix is a based dancer. Thanks guys.
Was gif related supposed to consolidate your argument?
not here to defend gen 6 or this poster but the "lol actually I think the bad animation is good aren't I wacky teehee lol he's dancing!!!" replies are cancerous
Unovagays don't play pokemon games.
>don't play pokemon games.
Gen 6 is not a pokemon game. It's pure fanfic.
GF half asses what it can do because they know many people who buy their games don't have much frames of reference to compare them too.
>dude! anime lmao!
frick off weeb, left looks so much better
pokemon is anime
cringe bait
>it's another Kalosperm thread
The game was a test-run for 3D Pokemon. The sprites are basically flat 3d models and their animation works with skeleton rigging.
That's why the sprites look crappy and have tilted pixels when moving
Because they're a flat image in 3D space so they can take advantage of a dynamic 3D camera
>all these newhomosexuals still responding to the bait
I love Unova but holy frick Unova fans are the most moronic people possible
I am bored, what else am I supposed to do. Ganker is slow today.
Hey, look, they've already resorted to the tactic of deflecting to other 3D games instead of defending their sprites!
Thats the old bort reliable
>”look how much better these models are”
>”those look terrible”
>”why are you talking about models?”
You didn't actually refute the fact that the models are better than the sprites.
pee pee poo poo
none of these are arguments
ok moron
Why would anyone with eyes need to do that?
Exactly, anyone with eyes can inherently tell the sprites are dogshit compared to the models so they wouldn't need to refute it
>Posters: 25, replies: 80
Yeah it's a kalosperm discord raider thread alright
>fans can animate high resolution sprites b-but the trillion dollar company can't, t-trust me bros
At least these ones are moving. Do you have anything longer? It'd be nice to see more than just an idle bouncing.
most gen 5 sprites are just idle bouncing. you should be complaining about how it’s on a computer in a completely different aspect ratio, and also with a static camera.
The Gen 5 sprites still usually have a mid-idle animation they do that's different from the normal bouncing. I'm really not asking for much.
you know essentials games aren't at all DS quality, right?
Cool. Now put it on a Nintendo DS.
They are regularly shown when the dynamic camera zooms out during battle. In Gen 4, the rest of the sprite literally doesn’t exist.
I'm more excited to see if this is possible, because the possibility of a HQ BW romhack is pretty neat to me. )Though I doubt it happening.)
>on PC
>which has way less restrictive VRAM unlike the DS
Try harder anon
>Captcha : 8A8N8Y
>can handle entire 3D games fine
>NOOOO NOT LE HECKIN SLIGHTLY BIGGER SPRITE ITS TOO MUCGH FOR THE RAM!!!!
Sure, shill.
>BRO JUST MAKE THE SPRITE PIXELS SMALLER THAN ACTUAL HARDWARE CAN SUPPORT!
Shill-kun....the right image is literally using Mewtwo's sprite from gen 4. Are you moronic by any chance?
you know the Mewtwo sprite doesn't exist behind/below the text box right?
you know it doesn’t matter because gen 5 already cuts off the back sprites right?
i wish i could lie this blatantly and shamelessly
Can you show me where Cobalion’s feet are?
Glad you agree it doesn’t matter if the sprite is big enough that part of it cuts off the screen.
I can’t believe there are people who unironically think this game has good spritework
I can't believe there are people who unironically think the Simpsons has good artwork
The Simpsons doesn’t have inconsistent scaling, undetailed lazily made blur backgrounds, and the characters don’t distort hideously when they move, so….
That’s an emulated screenshot of course it’s fricked
oh it's still YOU replying
yeah nevermind, not arguing with your moronic ass.
here's your last (You)
Hardware limitations = moronation?
Damn it sure is weird how Capcom was able to break those """hardware limitations""" For Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (2007)
>making good looking gifs is hard and the console can't run two at the same time
>a port of an entire Nintendo 64 game on the DS's launch? no problem
>a slightly bigger animated 2d sprite 8 years later? AIEEEEEEEE I'M LOSING MY MIND IT'S IMPOSSIBLE THERE ARE TOO MANY HARDWARE LIMITATIONS
>All pokemon in full 3D on a souped up nintendo ds? no problem
>same models with same animations and upscaled textures two years later? AIEEEEEEEE I'M LOSING MY MIND IT'S IMPOSSIBLE THERE ARE TOO MANY HARDWARE LIMITATIONS WE CAN'T AFFORD IT
>port a game that's 8MB tops to a system that eats cartridges over 10 times that for breakfast.
What a feat.
is there any way to actually make the b2w2 sprites look like that serperior edit with some filter? it looks really good honestly
>DS cartridge has enough space for 649 pokemon front, back, and shiny sprites, every single texture that has to be used in the overworld, all the music, and extra bullshit like pokestar studios props, and STILL has plenty of space to spare
>make ONE set of the pokemon sprites slighly bigger? NOOOOOO THAT’S SUDDENLY TOO MUCH FOR THE DS TO HANDLE AIEEEEE!!!!
I don't think you realize how much at capacity BW1 and 2 were.
>shiny sprites
R-moron-kun... those are just palette swaps. They take up a minuscule amount of space.
>every single texture
R-moron-kun... the textures are no different from tiles in every other Pokemon game. If it wasn't too much to have a 16x16 grass tile sprite in Ruby/Sapphire it would especially not be too much here.
>plenty of space to spare
R-moron-kun... a ROM I found of Pokemon Black is already 105 MB. Unless you wanted them to double their catridge size (and though I'm not particularly knowledgeable on production costs here, it'd make sense for this to be a little less than double the costs of production) they would've only had about 23 MB remaining.
They clearly needed Iwata to help them out with compression again...
Pokemon BW took up almost the entirety of the 256mb cartridge they were working with. B2W2 similarly took up the entirety of the 512mb cartridge it had
That’s the untrimmed ROM size. The actual size of the game is much smaller.
Over 9000 gorillion dollar franchise can't go without fart jokes
>change “Come at me Bro!” to “ET phone home”
Frick off OP and never work on a game ever in your life
Is this one of those "spot the difference" games?
It's animated and on a DS. Nice try yawngay
Gen 5 is and will probably always be the ugliest games in the franchise, which seems impossible, but even N64 tier models are better than stretched pixels tweened like a shitty Flash animation. I don't know how borts stomach it
Nobody who thinks gen 6 looks good should have an opinion on anything
>gen 1
>gen 3
i exclude gen 2 only because it wasn't bad looking for its time - just a bit underwhelming.
I like Gen 5 a lot mechanically but I do think that's a frickugly game; the palettes for the environments are so fricking dreary regardless of season.
wtf 2 has probably the most well-made spritework of any gameboy/gbc game
We all know who you are by this point. It's always you. Own up to it homosexual
weren't*
They could look better but I like how they look, I like that they are very animated as well
Always remember that this thread and all of it's images only exist because OP is a seething 3Dgay that's eternally assmad about the criticisms of 3D pokemon.
Definitely not like you, who's seething and eternally assmad about the criticisms of 2D pokemon, right?
the mew two sprite on the left has stretched pixels, right? like those in the gen 1 games
what I learned from this thread is that gen 5 isn’t actually good, gen 5 fanboys just lowered their standards so low from never playing a single handheld game outside of pokemon that they deluded themselves into thinking it’s good
